Conservative Root Canals
Hearing that you need a root canal might sound rather intimidating, probably don't understand all of the facts. A root canal is a conservative procedure that allows Dr. Ma to save a patient's tooth from extraction.
Teeth have multiple layers – the enamel that you see on the outside, an underlying layer of sensitive dentin, and a nerve (or pulp) housed inside canals. Through the canals in the tooth's root, the nerve brings nourishment to and removes waste from the living tooth. A deep cavity, fracture, or other injury can compromise the health of the nerve. When the nerve is irreparably damaged, infection sets in and causes pressure and pain. The patient has two options at this point - remove the internal infection to save the tooth or remove the tooth and, for best results, replace it.
Root canal therapy involves removing the infected pulp and replacing it with manmade material. Dr. Ma then crowns the tooth to seal and protect it. We administer various forms of sedation dentistry to keep patients comfortable during the procedure. If you're concerned about comfort during your root canal, talk with Dr. Ma.
